All the New Things

We had our 9th first day last week, sans my eldest who is currently making his way through basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. Senior year, 7th grade, 1st grade. Three students, not four. It’s a new thing.

We started the year as we always do, with ice cream in honor of great grandpa. In our previous state, we had to have a name for our homeschool. Marvin Ward Christian Academy became our legal name and it seemed quite fitting to begin the year with some of his favorite food. It has become a yearly tradition.

We usually start school the Tuesday after Labor Day. I feel that’s the best time to start. No summer school for us. The first day of school is synonymous with fall in the air (or so it should be) and so we wait just a bit to begin. After three days, I am super happy with almost all of the curriculum we are using this year! We are doing school on our main floor as opposed to the basement and it is uh- mazing. Daylight! Fresh air coming in the windows. All is well.

Our coat closet became our school storage, our dining room became our school room/library/dining room, and our living room couch became our reading spot. It is going to work fabulous.

I have a senior this year and so Friday morning I got up before the sunrise. I decorated our car with yellow window paint and went to the corner to grab a box of donuts and milk.

I returned home to kidnap my girl. I outfitted her with a yellow cape, gold crown, and put one of those over priced, over sized, over adorable balloons in her hand. We were met by some of our best people on the driveway!

Then off to the dock to watch the sunrise, complete with candles and goodie boxes. Senior Sunrise. It only happens once.

Although, I am pretty sure I need someone to facilitate this for me on my 65th birthday. Pretty sure that yellow tutu’s will be in order as well.

It’s a thing. A new one. Or at least it should be.
